Star Prairie Fish & Game Association July Meeting

Monday, July 20, 2009 –Menke Garage on Cedar Lake

 

 

     The July meeting of the SPF&G was called to order at 7:08 pm Vice President Chuck Magoon.

 

     The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were approved as read.

New Members :         

 

Committee Reports :

 

  1. Senior Pontoon ride : A fall pontoon ride on Cedar lake was discussed, it would be ride only with no food, possibly in late Sept. or early Oct.  It was suggested that Community Ed contact the people on the waiting list from the last ride, if we decide to hold a fall ride.
  2. Fisheries/Habitat :   $700 was paid to Dan Cain for food plots on Stanton Prairie WPA
  3. Park Party :   Plans are being finalized for the event on Thurs. Aug 20, with advertising tied into Ox Cart Days.  Tent size, food, etc were discussed.  There will be kid’s games in the afternoon.
  4. Buck’s Night :   All the guns are now on display at area taverns.  Members are encouraged to patronize these taverns.  General Raffle items were purchased from Sportsman.s Warehouse and Gander Mountain, including a kayak.  Club members are reminded that raffle tickets must be sold or purchased by the member.
  5. McMurtrie/Land Trust :   The Interpretive trail and guide books are complete, with a special thanks to Jim Riemer for his work on this.  Approval and plans are being made to have the preserve open to the public on selected weekends.
  6. OutReach/Youth :  Kid’s Fishing day sponsored by the Indianhead Basser’s was a success with 12 boats hosting kids 8 to 14 years old on lake Wappogasset.  Kids received a rod & reel for participating.
  7. The club has 34 members paid for 2009, and 15 Life ( age 65 and older).   . 

 

 

 

Old Business/New Business:

 

1.       Tom Kerr reported on the cooperative Turkey Stamp grant  with USF&W and the club which has been approved.   Work will be done on the Oak Ridge and Hanton WPA’s  to remove trees and invasive species and begin oak savannah restorations. 

2.      The Natural Resources board visited River Island park on June 23, club directors we there to answer questions.  Three of the DNR board members reside in our area.

3.      Phyllis Menke has donated $1000 to the club.

4.      Mike Reiter reported that the DNR is proposing a slot size based limit on bass in Squaw, Bass, Perch, and Glen Hills lakes.  The limit would be 3 bass, with fish 14 to 18 inches released, and one fish over 18 inches.  This may be fast tracked through the process and could go into affect in a year.

5.      The club tax return for 2008 has been submitted, a copy was circulated at the meeting. 

6.       Surveying area WPA’s for depth, fish populations, and water quality was discussed as was clearing of the Willow river for canoeing or kayaking.

 

          The next meeting of the SPF&GA is scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2009 with the 6:00 pm social hour and the 7:00 pm regular meeting at Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake
