Star Prairie Fish & Game Association August Meeting
August 21st, 2006 – Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake
The August
meeting of the SPF&GA was called to order at 7:00 pm by President Dan Bygd.
The Secretary’s
and Treasurer’s reports were read and approved as presented.
Special guests
included Wildlife Biologist Harvey Halvorsen and Political Candidate Rob
Stafsholt.
Reports for each
committee were given:
- The
educational building plans on the McMurtrie Preserve are presently on
hold. A land swap of property to allow for the placement of a viable
septic system is in the offing. Deed restrictions presently in place
complicate the issue. There are several options that are being considered
and will be addressed. Plans will move forward when these issues are
formalized.
- The
Armory and Gibby’s are both available for the 2006 Bucks Night function. A
decision has been left up to the Bucks Night Committee to make the final
decision at the committee meeting scheduled for Thursday, August 24th
starting at 7 pm at Don Madsen’s place on Cedar Lake.
- Terry
Zais reported that plans are moving along for the upcoming handicapped
pheasant hunt to be held on October 7th.
- Dan
Cain reported on Pheasant Forever’s progress in habitat restoration up to
this point in 2006. Burning encompassed 150 acres, while 30 acres of food
plots have been sowed, many thousands of trees planted, prairies
established and brush removed. The Boche Property needs to be mowed again
this year if possible.
- It was
reported that the Hudson Rod & Gun Club will not be participating in
the pheasant purchase and release this year. The Glenwood Club is still
interested. Terry Zais will coordinate the effort.
- Harvey
Halvorsen gave an update on the upcoming pheasant season. Crowing counts
in the Star Prairie area are way up. With good over wintering, the counts
are the highest since 1982 with a projected 8-15 pheasants per square mile
this fall. 2006 promises to be a
banner year for pheasant harvest.
- Thanks
you letters from sponsorship of the Bass Club’s kid’s fishing outing,
Friends of the Willow Sponsorship and the Health Center’s
Pontoon Rides were shared with the club.
- The
Park Party was again a big success. Sponsorships accounted for a large
part of this success. Stuart will provide a detailed report of the party
at the next meeting. There was a very nice crowd and with the afternoon
Seniors Activities plus the Kid’s Activities added a great time was had by
all!
- The
SPF&GA currently has a paid up membership of 49 and growing.
Old Business:
1.
The club cap supply is dwindling. A motion was
made and approved to purchase 36 dozen more in 3 colors for a price of $4.25
per cap.
2.
The SPF&GA will help sponsor a Youth Hunt to
be held at the Forest Ridge Hunting Club on September 9th with the
commitment to split half the cost of the lunch which will be provided at no
cost to the participants. Approximately 30 youth will be invited to hunt
pheasants and take part in numerous outdoor demonstrations. A motion was made
and approved to also cover the cost of purchase of half the pheasants up to
$300.
3.
Dan Cain will acquire two SPF&GA club
banners at a cost of up to $200.
4.
Don Demulling showed the club examples of “club
cards” that are available. Dan Michaelis provided Don the samples. A decision
to purchase 1000 club cards printed on both sides for a cost of $55.00 was
approved.
New Business:
- The
Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District’s Annual Meeting was
held on Saturday, August 5th. SPF&GA Vice President Chuck
Magoon presented an overview of our 2005 partnership and accomplishments
at that meeting. Chuck’s report was very well received.
- A letter from the Village of Star
Prairie was read. In the letter the Village
responded to two of the club’s concerns. It authorized the SPF&GA to
finish the buckthorn removal project at Saratoga Park.
It also stated that any inquiries for memorials would be brought before a
meeting of the Village Park Committee for their discussion and
recommendation.
- Harvey
Halvorsen gave an update on the upcoming CWD testing to be done this fall
in St Croix and Pierce
Counties. A goal of
500 samples will be collected between the 2 counties. An incentive program
is being implemented to provide a drawing for gift cards at Gander Mountain. Each person that provides
a sample for CWD testing will be eligible for the drawing. The SPF&GA
made a donation of $100.00 for this program. There was discussion of
perhaps helping physically with this sampling which may also be an option.
- Assembly
candidate Rob Stafsholt gave a short political promo and asked for our
support in the next election.
The next meeting of the SPF&GA is scheduled for Monday, September 18th
with the 6 pm social hour and the 7 pm regular meeting at Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake
With no further
business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted
Mike Reiter (Recorder)
