Star Prairie Fish & Game Association July Meeting

July 17th, 2006 – Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake

The July meeting of the SPF&GA was called to order at 7:00 pm by Vice President Chuck Magoon.

The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and approved as presented.

Special guests included Warden Rick Rosen, Warden Trainee Donna Juncer, USF&WS Representative Jim Riemer and Phyllis Menke.

A framed photo of Cedar Lake was presented to Mrs. Menke by Stu Nelson on behalf of the Star Prairie Land Preservation Trust in recognition of all she has done for both the Trust and the SPF&GA. She in turn presented the SPF&GA with a check for $1000.00 in consideration for all the club has done for conservation in the area.

Reports for each committee were given:

  1. The educational building plans on the McMurtrie Preserve are presently on hold. A land swap of property to allow for the placement of a viable septic system is in the offing. Plans will move forward when these issues are formalized.
  2. A Winchester rifle has been purchased for the upcoming Bucks Night live auction and will be stored by member Craig Warren.
  3. The Armory and Gibby’s are both available for the 2006 Bucks Night function. A decision has been left up to the Bucks Night Committee to make the final decision.
  4. Rick Rosen gave an update on changes in two county fisheries regulation proposals. Fisheries Manager Marty Engel has submitted a request to reduce the panfish bag limit for 25 to 10 countywide and also to impose a protective slot size on walleyes in Cedar Lake from 14-18 inches. A reduced bag of 3 walleyes is also being requested on the lake.
  5. Rick also reported that night bow fishing has become a problem on Cedar Lake with noise and lighting complains by lake residents.
  6. “The Gray for a Day” golf outing has been put on hold for 2006. Because of possible “conflict of interest” with DNR policy the event has been cancelled but will be evaluated for 2007 as a viable conservation fund raising tool and public relations opportunity.
  7. Plans for the 2006 Park Party are on schedule. An early “Senior” portion of the party is being added and will run from 1-3:30 pm with demonstrations, music, exhibits and a light food menu provided.
  8. A motion was made and approved for the donation of a $300.00 sponsorship for the ZOR Shriners at the 2006 Ox Cart Days.

Old Business:

  1. A letter describing the SPF&GA’s involvement with the River Island Park was read. This letter will be sent to Star Prairie Village Board members along with a copy of the original grant submission for the park. It is hoped that the SPF&GA can continue to work in partnership with the Village on various projects in the future as they have in the past.
  2. The SPF&GA’s donation box that was removed from River Island Park at the Village Board’s request will be set up at the north landing on Cedar Lake for donations to provide funds for future fish crib construction and placement. Posts have been donated with Don Demulling spearheading the project.
  3. The Boche Property located east of Star Prairie has been burned, tilled and planted with prairie forbs and grasses. A workday will be rescheduled sometime in July or early August for the removal of black locust. Jim Riemer from the USF&WS gave a review of the project and also an overview of our current draught situation.
  4. A review of the ongoing Invasive Species Inventory on area Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) was given. Today was the start of the inventory with Clapp WPA the first to be studied.

New Business:

  1. The Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District’s Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 5th. The SPF&GA will present an overview of their 2005 partnership and accomplishments at this meeting.
  2. Don Demulling showed the club examples of “club cards” that are available. Dan Michaelis provided Don the samples. A decision on the cards has been tabled until next meeting.
  3. The SPF&GA club cap supply is down to 4 dozen. A decision for the purchase of more caps will be made at the next meeting when a price can be provided. The new emblem will be on our new caps making the old version collector items!
  4. A club fundraising “paddle wheel” will be provided shortly and the club logo will be on the wheel.
  5. The SPF&GA will help sponsor a Youth Hunt to be held at the Forest Ridge Hunting Club on September 9th with the commitment to split half the cost of the lunch which will be provided at no cost to the participants. Approximately 30 youth will be invited to hunt pheasants and take part in numerous outdoor demonstrations.
  6.  Goose hunting on county land west of Hatfield Lake near New Richmond is being considered to help the City of New Richmond airport with its goose problem. Plans are being devised for the hunt format. The fall hunt will follow the normal DNR hunting season framework.
  7. The Squaw Lake aeration system, boat landing and parking area are concerns. A meeting will be scheduled bringing all stakeholder groups to the table. Historic operational activities and documentation has been compiled so that responsibilities and guidelines can be set. The dock’s physical position and condition has been reviewed by the County Parks Department and proper steps will be taken to bring it back into a state suitable for use the remainder of the 2006 season.

The next meeting of the SPF&GA is scheduled for Monday, August 21st with the 6 pm social hour and the 7 pm regular meeting at Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake

With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.

                                                                            Respectfully submitted

                                              Mike Reiter (Recorder)
