Star Prairie Fish & Game Association June Meeting

June 19th, 2006 – Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake

The May meeting of the SPF&GA was called to order at 7:10 pm by President Dan Bygd.

The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and approved as presented.

Reports for each committee were given:

  1. Bucks Night – Plans are on track and the Committee will decide on a recommendation for the 2006 Bucks Night location and relate that recommendation to the club at the next meeting.
  2. The 10 Gun raffle is coming together also and guns will be hung in various local establishments. Chuck Magoon advised the club that because of work commitments he may not be able to continue his lead with the raffle. Erv Erickson later agreed to take up the slack.
  3. Dan Cain noted that there will be a youth pheasant hunt the second weekend in September at the Forrest Ridge Hunting Club near Glenwood City.
  4. Aquatic plants have been planted on the southeast corner of Cedar Lake by the SPF&GA, Cedar Lake Rehabilitation and Protection District, Cedar Lake Land Trust and the DNR. If successful more intensive plantings will be planned in the future on the lake.
  5. The New Richmond High School Service Day held on May 18th was a huge success with fence repair, buckthorn removal and trail maintenance performed at Saratoga Springs and an oak savannah restoration completed on the McMurtrie Preserve.
  6. Plans for the River Island Park Party scheduled for Wednesday, August 15th are progressing. Music has been scheduled, the tent has been reserved, Diggers Hotline needs to be contacted, the trolleys need to be reserved, a sound system is needed and programs, advertisers, beverage and food need to be ordered. A silent auction may be added for donated prizes. Mike Kelly will help to coordinate the effort.

Thirteen pontoons carried 118 seniors around the lake and a delicious brat and trout dinner was served after the cruise. Numerous door prizes were handed out and a good time was had by all! It was suggested that a full spare gas can be provided for Chris Polfus’s pontoon during future outings.
  8. The Star Prairie Fish and Game Association membership now stands at 50 individuals.
  9. Erv Erickson reported on the Kid’s Fishing Day held by the Bassmasters and sponsored by the SPF&GA. It was held on Long Lake in Polk County with 12 kids participating. A thank you note was read from the Bassmasters and signed by the kids.

A response will appear in the New Richmond paper. The SPF&GA has decided to step back and review the situation. Partnerships are extremely important for the club and we need to continue to work with the Village to accomplish our goals. A letter will be sent to the Village Board detailing our plans and highlighting the club’s willingness to work with the Village moving forward. A potential meeting with the Village Parks Committee to outline a course of action and partnership arrangement will be pursued.
