Star Prairie Fish & Game Association May Meeting

May 15th, 2006 – Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake

The May meeting of the SPF&GA was called to order at 7:00 pm by President Dan Bygd.

The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and approved as presented.

Reports for each committee were given:

1.    Perk testing has been performed on the McMurtrie property. Marginal “perking” has given us a choice of 3 options. Each will be examined and a decision made soon.

2.    Additional guns will be purchased for the 10 gun raffle displays and will be hung soon in local establishments. The possibility of other businesses besides bars displaying the guns is an option.

3.    Several club members helped the DNR stock trout in the Willow and Apple Rivers. Grade school and high school students also participated in the stocking. A complimentary SPF&GA hat will be provided to each of the student participants.

4.    The New Richmond Service Day is scheduled for Thursday May 18th. Two homerooms have been scheduled for work at Saratoga Springs Park and the Star Prairie Ball Field. Members will meet at the River Island Park at 8 am to help with the Service Day students.

5.    Dan Bygd will present the Bob Moberg Memorial Scholarship at a formal presentation this spring.

6.    The Indianhead Pheasant Forever Chapter will be sponsoring a youth Pheasant hunt at the Forest Ridge Hunt Club. More information will be coming soon.

7.    The SPF&GA has joined the ranks of the clubs in support of the Teaming with Wildlife Program.

8.    A Water Activity Volunteer (WAV) workshop will be held on Saturday, May 20th, in River Falls. Several of our members are involved in this program.

9.    A copy of our completed IRS tax return was provided and a return will be filled on an annual basis going forward.

10. Plans for the River Island Park Party which is scheduled for August 15th, is progress smoothly. Bands are on board and additional educational programs are scheduled. Food will be served at noon and an e-mail announcement of an upcoming planning meeting will be going out soon.

11. The Senior Pontoon Rides, offered through Community Education and scheduled for Thursday, June 15th are already full. About 120 people have committed to the event. Members will meet at noon at River Island Park to get things ready for a 1:30 pm start. A trout dinner will be provided after the event starting at 4 pm.

Old Business:

1.    The Village of Star Prairie will be applying for a grant to upgrade the ball park facility and has asked the SPF&GA for a commitment for in kind labor as part of the Village’s matching efforts in receiving the grant. Following much discussion it was felt that the club could provide a letter of support for the project upon request and a limited amount of in kind labor. Due to other commitments at this time which includes work on the McMurtrie environmental center and projected involvement in the Saratoga Springs project it could not stretch the limits of club member involvement. This is the current position of the SPF&GA.

New Business:

1.    Aquatic habitat plantings will be performed within the next few weeks along the southeast corner of Cedar Lake. This will be a joint effort of the DNR, SPF&GA, Cedar Lake Land Trust and the Cedar Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District. Funding will be determined and in kind physical labor will be provided.

2.    Jim Riemer, from the USF&WS, gave an overview of plans for the Star Prairie Land Trust’s Boche property. Burning has been completed on this 40 acre parcel with native, local prairie seed plantings scheduled. Help will be provided by the SPF&GA for clearing of some of the noxious trees and brush that is growing around the edges of the area. A workday is planned for Saturday, June 10th. More information will be forthcoming.

3.    The Zor Shriners will be sponsoring a sporting clays tournament on June 17th & 18th at the Whispering Emerald Ridge Game Farm in Menomonie.

The next meeting of the SPF&GA is scheduled for Monday, June 19th with the 6 pm social hour and the 7 pm regular meeting at Don Madsen’s on Cedar Lake

With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:40 pm.

                                                                            Respectfully submitted

                                              Mike Reiter (Recorder)
